How One Busy Woman Lost 20 Pounds in 4 Months
Dodie Buttice is a 43-year-old registered nurse from a small town in Washington. With a police officer husband, 5 children and 7 grandchildren, she has a lot to keep her busy. In addition to family commitments, she often works up to 72 hours per week as a labor and delivery nurse.
For most of her life, Dodie could eat whatever she wanted without consequences. However, when she turned 40 it suddenly seemed that no matter what she ate, she would gain weight. Following her 40th birthday, she gained 30 pounds in 3 years.
“Turning 40 hit me like a ton of bricks. I’ve been pretty active my whole life, so that was really frustrating.” Dodie explained.
As a long-time runner, training more consistently was all she had to do to shed pounds. But physical activity was no longer providing the same weight loss results.
“I tried walking and working out, and I could lose 5 pounds, and that was it,” she explained.
An Eye-Opening Wakeup Call
Frustrated by her inability to lose weight, Dodie stopped checking the scale. When she visited the doctor, she would ask them not to tell her what she weighed.
Then, one day in May, reality struck, and looking the other way was no longer an option.
Dodie’s doctor informed her that while her fasting blood sugar level was previously 70 mg/dL, it had now risen to 118 mg/dL. According to Mayo Clinic, fasting blood sugar levels ranging from 100 to 125 mg/dL are considered prediabetes.
The doctor told her that she was well on her way to diabetes if she continued to gain weight.
With a family history of diabetes, Dodie had always thought that she would be the exception. However, she now found herself in a position where she could no longer hope for the best with clear cut proof that she needed to change her ways.
In addition to her blood sugar levels, the doctor also gave her a sheet showing all of her risk factors, as well as her current weight. She had avoided seeing what the scale had to say for years. But when finally faced with reality, she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
“What the heck? How did I get to this point?” she remembered thinking.
Time to Make a Change
Frustrated, Dodie asked her doctor what she was doing wrong.
Her doctor advised that it wasn’t her activity levels that were causing her to gain weight, but rather her eating habits. He also explained that she was at a point in her life where her diet would have a more pronounced impact on her health. In order to see noticeable changes, she needed to improve her eating habits.
Faced with the harsh reality of her current health status, Dodie left the doctor’s appointment committed to making a change.
“I had that ‘you’ve got to do something moment,’ and that’s when I found [Factor’s] site,” she said.
Healthy & Convenient Meal Options
It was now or never to make her health a priority, and Dodie began her journey by researching healthy meal options. She tried a few different meal kits, but the amount of time required to cook the meals outweighed the convenience of having the ingredients delivered to her door.
After some research, Dodie turned to Factor’s fresh, fully-prepared, dietitian-approved meals. In terms of health and taste, she wanted delicious, high-protein meals that made her want to eat her veggies. In terms of service, she needed budget-friendly meals that delivered to her small town.
Factor checked all the boxes.
Even her husband, who she describes as the skeptic, was pleasantly surprised by Factor’s tasty meals and convenient service.
The Many Benefits of Factor
“I think the biggest stress for people is that they wake up and they have to worry about what’s for dinner tonight. I don’t have to worry about that right now,” Dodie explained.
Now that she has meal planning covered, Dodie can use her free time to hit the gym, spend time with family, relax and even enjoy an uninterrupted cup of coffee.
Then there’s the money she’s saving from not wasting perishable items she would purchase at the grocery store.
“For us, when I start adding up the money, I’m actually spending way less money [using Factor meals],” she explained. As an added bonus, the meals are conveniently delivered right to her door.
A New Perspective on Healthy Eating
After 4 months of embracing healthy eating with the help of Factor meals, Dodie is down 20 pounds and her blood sugars are back within a normal range. More importantly, she’s feeling healthier, and happier.
She said, “I have had a few friends say, ‘but the calories are so high on those meals.’ My response to them is don’t count the calories, but make the calories count. An 800 calorie fast food meal is not the same as an 800 calorie meal with vitamins and protein that is well proportioned.
“I wish I had known this years ago. My whole life has been trying to eat under 1200 calories a day. But I never considered what kind of calories I was eating except as much protein as possible. My mindset has changed and so has my health.”
